Learn to play chess with an
experienced teacher
January 14-18 at 6pm Ages 10 +@ the Wells Branch Community Library
The library will offer a chess camp for students to learn the fundamentals of the game, learn strategies, play with others to increase your skill and enjoyment of the game.
Chess is a complicated game but can be learned using this system. There are six different pieces, each with different moves and powers. The library has several chess boards but students are encouraged to bring their own. Following the week of chess camp, the library will offer a monthly chess club meeting.
Sessions for the "chess camp" week:
1. We begin with the concept of CHECK and CHECKMATE, with only two kings on the board. This would be followed by a black king, played by the instructor, and a white king and two rooks, played by one of the students. This makes it sure that the student wins.
Next, the students will be paired off and the same board setup used. Each student then gets to play both sides of the setup. Depending on time and interest, we will go to king and queen vs. king, followed by king and rook vs. king.
2. The second session will cover king, bishop, and queen, and king and two bishops.
3. The third session will cover knights, pawns, and other odds & ends.
4. The fourth session will look at several recorded games. This will cover why the moves are made. The students will be shown the importance of center control, diagonal control by bishops, and when, and when not to castle.
5. The fifth session will cover board patterns which can lead to checkmate, and how to force these patterns by sacrifice.
